FYR Macedonia Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD)

The World Bank Group is preparing a Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) for FYR Macedonia. Prepared in close consultation with national authorities and other stakeholders, the SCD aims at identifying the most critical constraints and opportunities to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity in a sustainable manner. This diagnostic will assess barriers and opportunities for inclusive and sustainable growth in the country, and identify policy priorities.

To guide our support to Macedonia’s sustainable growth and inclusion agenda, we would like to hear your views. We are seeking opinions about Macedonia’s development priorities and insights into the real challenges faced by citizens in their daily lives.

The online consultations process is open from February 1st, 2018 to March 18th, 2018.

We are particularly interested to see your ideas about:

1. What needs to change in the country development model to unleash private sector-led growth? How can Macedonian firms connect more intensively to the global economy? How can private investment can be boosted in the country? How can competition be promoted in local markets? How to improve the capacity of local firms for adopting modern technologies?

2. What can be done to increase employment and make workers more productive? How can Macedonia address the decline in education quality? Which reforms in legislation could promote a higher participation in labor markets? What should be done in order to increase employment opportunities, especially by minority ethnic groups and women? 

3. What is needed to ensure fiscal and environmental sustainability? How can the debt level be maintained at a reasonable level? How can government spending be made more efficient? How can the pension system be reformed to become sustainable? How can pollution be controlled in big cities? How can communities build more resilience in front of natural hazards?

4. What should be done for improving the quality of institutions in the country? What are the main obstacles for the prevalence of rule of law? How can the capacity of the public sector to deliver services be improved? How can improve the accountability of the public sector? How can the government become more responsive to citizens demands?
